At the Regular Business meeting of the Eaton County Democratic Party, party members unanimously voted to adopt the following resolution in response to a candidate filing and mailing from March 2020.
Resolution Opposing the Candidacy of Joe Jager for Sheriff
Adopted April 16, 2020
Whereas the Eaton County Democratic Party remains neutral when there are multiple Democratic candidates in a primary election, except under extraordinary circumstances.
Whereas we have an extraordinary circumstance with the candidacy of Joe Jager, running as a Democrat for Sheriff,
Whereas Mr. Jager is not a current member of the Michigan Democratic Party, the Eaton County Democratic Party, nor has any history of being a member of the Democratic Party, the Michigan Democratic Party, the Eaton County Democratic Party,
Whereas Mr. Jager was a Republican candidate on the ballot in 2006 for the office of Sheriff,
Whereas Mr. Jager was a Republican candidate for Sheriff in 2016, publicly supported by Republican Rick Jones, and eventually withdrew and did not appear on the ballot. His Treasurer upon filing was Charlene Jones,
Whereas Mr. Jager has a history of providing financial support to Republican candidates including 11 donations to Republican Rick Jones,
Whereas Mr. Jager has used a reference to the Nazi “Third Reich” in his current candidacy for Sheriff, which is beyond decency standards for any candidate,
Whereas the Eaton County Democratic Party believes that Mr. Jager is working behind the scenes with Republicans in his efforts to discredit and disparage Sheriff Reich, as his literature echoes themes the Republicans have put forward.
Whereas the conduct or statements by Mr. Jager do not reflect the values or beliefs of any Democratic candidate for any office nor the Eaton County Democratic Party, and thus would be an embarrassment to Eaton County and the Eaton County Democratic Party,
We Therefore Resolve that the Eaton County Democratic Party disavows and opposes the candidacy of Joe Jager for the office of Eaton County Sheriff.
