The Eaton County Democratic Party convened on Thursday evening to discuss business before the committee.
This year, the County Party will engage in support of our elected officials at the County and State level as well as issues that align with the values of the Democratic Party. To that end, a resolution was drafted in support of the Eaton County Board of Commissioners’ plan to revise planning and zoning ordinances to include guidelines and requirements for small, medium, and large solar panel arrays or fields.
The Resolution passed unanimously and is as follows:
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE ADOPTION OF A ZONING ORDINANCE PERMITTING AND REGULATING COMMERCIAL-SCALE SOLAR ARRAYS IN EATON COUNTY
WHEREAS, improvements in solar technology now allow the efficient and profitable collection of solar energy in climates such as Michigan; and
WHEREAS, commercial developers have expressed interest in developing commercial-scale solar energy arrays in areas of Eaton County within the jurisdiction of the County Planning Commission, necessitating the adoption of some type of regulation to ensure that all interested parties are protected as the process of development and use occurs; and
WHEREAS, it is recognized that regulating solar arrays is a new task for zoning law. As experience is gained throughout the country, it is likely that solar zoning principles will change to utilize best practices; and changes will be made to the ordinance that is adopted.
WHEREAS, the Eaton County Commission is currently considering such regulation in the form of amendments to the County Zoning Ordinance;
NOW THEREFORE, the Membership of the Eaton County Democratic Party hereby endorses the adoption of a zoning ordinance permitting and regulating the development of large-scale solar arrays in Eaton County.
